ABOUT our garden

The Hirosaki Botanical Garden is one of Japan’s most beautiful botanical gardens, featuring a wide range of Japanese and non-Japanese plants, designed in the traditional Japanese style.

Stretching over 160 hectares (40 acres) of precisely landscaped grounds, the gardens feature areas to suit all tastes.

Hirosaki Botanical boasts both formal and informal gardens, as well as the famous Kaminari maze, which is popular with guests of all ages.

Opened in 1981, the gardens first became famous for the stunning Dragon Pagoda.

The park quickly became popular with locals as a place to spend time and it now has three separate coffee shops within its grounds.

In 1995, the Hirosaki Parks Commission began construction on the Doukutsu Greenhouse. It opened in the following year and at the time was the largest freestanding greenhouse in the Aomori prefecture. However, construction ran over budget, meaning plants weren’t added to the greenhouse until 2011.
